CMSC’S TRIP TO

                    ST.ANTON/VIENNA

           By Randy Baustert

he 2013 Europe ski trip was to St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria, Skiing was the big draw for some, but for others there
which is nestled against a backdrop of mountain peaks in were side trips, such as bus trips to the neighboring villages
the Tyrolean Alps. It’s a modern resort but still keeps the Old of St. Christoph, Lech and Zurs. And high-speed trains to
World charm we’ve learned to love. St. Anton is the crown Innsbruck, just an hour away. There were tours through
jewel of the Arlberg lift ticket, which includes St. Anton, museums and churches, afternoon stops for apple strudel
St. Christoph, Stuben, Zurs, Lech, Oberlech, Klosterle with vanilla sauce, an evening toboggan run and a horse-
and Sonnenkopf. drawn carriage ride through the tundra.

In late January, 40 lucky CMSC club members left O’Hare
Airport on SWISS airlines. We love SWISS because of their
great service, great meals and our skis fly for free. Arrival
in Zurich was followed by a three-hour bus ride to St. Anton
and the three-star Hotel Nassereinerhof. The hotel was
everything we were promised—it was a short walk to the
lifts and oozed Old World ambiance. Full breakfasts and
multi-course dinners were included for the entire stay.

Many skied six days—each day skiing a different area, often
skiing from one area to another on long circuitous routes,
stopping at mountain huts for morning coffee, lunch and
afternoon tea. It’s almost a combination of downhill skiing
and ski touring. We still take the lift up and the ski run down,
but instead of remaining above the same base area, we go
up one mountain and down the other side, then up the next
mountain and down the other side, from ski area to ski area,
town to town in the Austrian Alps. All on one lift ticket.
After the week in St. Anton am Arlberg, some in our group visited Vienna.
